Just and Sustainable Food Systems

Learn about Judaism’s tradition of using food as a vehicle for social justice.  Hear from local farmers and organizers about their work in creating just and sustainable food systems in Philadelphia. Confirmed panelists are Johanna Rosen of Mill Creek Farm, Ann Karlen of the Fair Food Project, Sharat Somashekara of City Harvest and Joanna Pernick of Farm to City.

Environmental Sustainability & Social Justice
Friday, October 26th 7:00 PM; Calvary Center(48th & Baltimore)

Join Kol Tzedek for Friday Night Services and Urban Edge dinner as we discuss where environmental sustainability and social justice overlap.  The panel includes Rabbi Arthur Waskow of the Shalom Center and Professor Michael Nairn of the University of Pennsylvania. This free event is a vegetarian potluck. Please bring a dish that shows your support of local and sustainable agriculture. In an effort to limit our waste from this dinner, please bring your own dish and utensil.

Hands-on Workshops
Sunday, October 28th 10:00 AM; Meet at 4905 Cedar; Please RSVP

Participate in hands-on workshops to learn how to compost and grow food in your own backyard. Neighborhood Bike Works will be running a bike-repair workshop, and afterwards bike on over to Mill Creek Farm to learn about urban agriculture, waste water runoff, and green building techniques. A light lunch will be provided.

Sunday Details

Join us for a full day of hands on workshops and skill shares.  Topics include bike repair, composting and seed saving, among others. A light lunch compliments of the White Dog CafĂ©, the Urban Nutrition Initiative's Food Education Squad and Kaffa Crossing will be provided.  After lunch we will venture over to Neighborhood Bike Works (3916 Locust Walk-Rear) for a bike repair workshop followed by a bike tour of two urban farms.  You must provide your own bike or other mode of transportation.
