The Farm at Eden Village

Putnam Valley, NY

The Jewish Farm School and Eden Village Camp established the Farm at Eden Village in 2010. JFS works with EVC to oversee the organic educational farm for the summer program and also runs a variety of programs at Eden Village when camp is not in session.

The Farm at Eden Village  is roughly 2 acres, with a ¼ to a ½ acre in production, ¾ acre in cover crop, and the rest in permanent raised bed educational gardens. It consists of several elements, including no-till raised beds, tilled production fields, a raised bed, sunflower-shaped Jewish calendar garden outlined in stone, a medicinal herb garden, a sukkah in the middle of the farm, and much more! In 2011 we grew close to 3,000 pounds of fresh produce and donated close to 500 pounds of it to the Fishkill Food Pantry.

Our farm also includes a variety of animals, including chickens and one or two milking goats, with expansion in the works for upcoming seasons. Eggs are used in the camp dining hall, as is the goat milk, to make cheese, yogurt, or ice cream. In 2011 we added two hives of bees and also borrowed some sheep for the summer from our friends up the road.

There are also several “snack gardens” around the various camp cabins, where the campers and staff can snack on perennial berries or vegetables such as cherry tomatoes or carrots.

In the fall of 2010, we established our edible forest garden by planting over 10 fruit trees alongside guilds of beneficial plants. We also experimented with various forms of mushroom cultivation in the 2010 and 2011 seasons.

Our farm is on the grounds of Eden Village Camp. Click here for directions.
